Jane R. Shaw, DVM, PhD is an Assistant Professor of Veterinary Communication and the Director of the Argus Institute at Colorado State University. The Argus Institute consists of: a clinical support program assisting clients who are making difficult decisions related to the healthcare of their pet; a teaching program developing communication curricula and conducting clinical interview training for veterinary students, interns, residents, clinicians and staff; and a research program investigating veterinarian-client-patient communication. Dr. Shaw received her veterinary degree from Michigan State University in 1994 and received her PhD in Epidemiology at the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada in 2004. Her dissertation was the first scientific study of veterinarian-client-patient communication and her publications focus on the analysis of conversation between veterinarians and their clients and animal patients. Dr. Shaw serves on the advisory committee for the International Conference on Communication in Veterinary Medicine. She presents research abstracts and is the only veterinarian attendee at the International Conference on Communication in Healthcare. Dr. Shaw is called upon to conduct communication workshops at national veterinary conferences and symposia. Her academic background includes serving as an instructor for the problem-based learning curriculum at Cornell University and as Assistant Professor of Epidemiology and Communication at Western University of Health Sciences. She has clinical experience in companion animal practice, private practice and academic settings. She was the founder of Cornell Companions, an animal-assisted activities program that works with developmentally disabled children and served as advisor to student volunteers at Pet Loss Support Hotlines. . |
